The owners of the BEST WESTERN Henbury Lodge Hotel, Bristol, are so passionate about being green they have installed electric car charging at the hotel for guests to use free of charge.
Tim and Ros Forrester installed a 13amp RCD outdoor plug at the hotel and it costs less than the freshly squeezed orange juice served at breakfast to charge a guest’s electric car over night. It takes just 10 hours to charge a car from empty and this gives approximately 100miles if the car is driven carefully.
Electric car charging points are still very rare, the BBC reported* recently that just over a tenth of the electric car charging points needed in the UK have been built so far, and even fewer in the Bristol area with just two in the city centre in Cabot Circus and The Mall.
Owning an unusual Nissan Leaf 100% electric car themselves, Roz and Tim are familiar with the benefits of the green cars. They enjoy the quiet drive and take particular pleasure in driving past petrol stations when prices are now up to £1.40/litre.
Their own five door hatch back is big enough to give staff and guests lifts when needed, and will carry building supplies to help with the continual upgrade of the hotel.
Tim said: “We selected the LEAF as it is the only electric car developed from the ground up as an electric car. The only other electric cars - the Mitsubishi and the Peugeot - are existing petrol cars converted to electric. We decided on an electric car as we see it as the only way forward to resolve environmental and energy issues.
“We live in the Royal Crescent in Bath and within a few minutes of parking the car in the Crescent, people were taking pictures of the car. We have only seen one other LEAF on the road in Bristol and think more people should be aware of the benefits of these fantastic cars.”
Tim is keen for the other businesses in the Bristol area and Best Western hotels to know about electric car charging and install it for their customers to improve the network of places to charge the cars. The plugs can be used for outside gardening equipment as well as charging cars. He is also campaigning for booking.com and Late Rooms to add an icon for electric car charging available to the websites.
